The demand for qualifications in payroll has been rising rapidly over the last few years, as tax and employment legislation continues to get more complex, and employers are finding it more and more important to have properly trained staff managing and delivering the critical payroll function.
For those unfamiliar with the types of qualifications on offer, here is a simple guide:
• For those wishing to start of their payroll careers, a Foundation level qualification will groom the individual in the necessary skills to do basic payroll tasks accurately and effectively. There are even a number of programmes (typically offered by local colleges) which are below Foundation level, and are suitable as a building block to a Foundation level qualification in due course.
• Those wishing to extend their careers into the supervisory or departmental management level, there are a number of Diplomas in payroll offered, all of which have exemptions for those who already hold Foundation level qualifications. Most payroll managers in medium to large size companies will have a payroll diploma - but do remember that a diploma is only a piece of paper, unless your experience and knowledge is being continually refreshed!
• There is at present one MSc programme in payroll for those who need a more strategic view of payroll in the context of organisational processes and strategy. This is a small programme, but increasingly popular for those who aspire to the peak of the payroll profession.
Most of these qualifications are delivered via classroom or distance learning programmes, however there are a number of elearning programmes also on offer. |
