Paul Rains
 I have worked in the HR / Payroll industry since 1974, working my way up from a wages clerk to a Group Payroll Manager and then onto an HR / Payroll Project Manager. I have seen the profession progress from Kalamazoo wage sheets to web based systems with automated processes and calculations. I have had experience of working in a centralised service, a devolved service and a shared service centre.
I believe HR and Payroll should provide a service that supports both operational managers and front line services that it can make a real contribution to the profitability / cost effectiveness of the organisation.
As a visionary and strategic thinker with a very good understanding of HR Payroll processes, systems and technology I have always preferred innovative solutions as an approach to problem solving and I strongly believe we need to grasp the opportunity we have now to become the global centre of excellence for HR and Payroll processing.
I have worked in HR / Payroll departments in local government, the global banking and financial sector, utilities, retail, facilities management and the support services sectors for FTSE top 100 companies. Each one very different, with it’s own set of unique idea’s and challenges. I have been involved in out sourcing projects, In sourcing, divestments, acquisitions, setting up shared services and process re-engineering / improvement.
I have experience of facilitating and presenting and I am Six Sigma Black Belt trained so I have a passion for promoting excellence. My courses are usually entertaining and interactive with several team exercises to ensure everyone gets involved.
In the past I have chaired several Payroll / HR software users groups and I was a former Director of Reunion (the user group of the Peterborough based Rebus HR products) and I am a regular and well respected speaker at Softworld and the CIPD HRSS and have run workshops at the two of the last three IPP Annual Conferences on how technology can influence the delivery of HR and Payroll services.
I am now a Director of a well respected HR / Payroll Consultancy Company called Transact HR Ltd.
